Last week, Warner Brothers engaged in a clever, timely bit of counter-programming by releasing a teaser trailer for The LEGO Batman Movie. The lighter, cartoonish take on Batman presented a fun, refreshing alternative to the angry, grim, homicidal version of the Dark Knight seen in Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, essentially making fun of everything Zack Snyder and Ben Affleck presented seriously in this past weekend’s superhero team-up blockbuster.
Following up on BvS‘ $166 million domestic box office take from the Easter holiday weekend, along with $254 million in international box office, in light of rather poor reviews (earning a 29 percent rating on Rotten Tomatoes), Warner Bros. released another teaser trailer for The LEGO Batman Movie on Monday. This was likely the plan all along, but maybe there’s a bit more good feeling with this one, after the relief of a big opening weekend box office draw.
Check out the new teaser, which shows a bit more of Batman’s home life, hanging out in stately Wayne Manor:

Is it a little weird that LEGO Batman (voiced by Will Arnett) never takes off his cowl, keeping it on even while dressed in a bathrobe? But hey, that fits with the whole idea that Bruce Wayne is the mask and Batman is his true identity. Still, you’d think he has to let that thing air out every night. The sweat build-up alone would be… formidable.
Anyway, this teaser is also notable for the presence of Batman’s trusted butler and right-hand man, Alfred Pennyworth (with Ralph Fiennes providing the voice). If Jeremy Irons hadn’t done such a great job in BvS as Alfred, Fiennes would seemingly be in line as an excellent replacement. He’d get that wry, smart-ass quality down perfectly.
The LEGO Batman Movie will hit theaters on Feb. 10, 2017.
