We can presumably all agree that 33 years old is far too young an age to die. That it happened to comedian Chris Farley due to a drug overdose adds to the tragedy, if that’s even possible.
Dying that young also adds some mystique to a performer’s career, however. We wonder what could have been, had his or her life not been cut so short. What else could Farley have shared with us? Had he only begun to fulfill his potential as a comic talent, or might he be now be viewed as past his time, similarly to how contemporaries such as Adam Sandler and David Spade are perceived now?
What can certainly be said about Farley besides the man’s work is that he left a huge impression on his friends and the people he worked with. That seems to be the basis of I Am Chris Farley, a documentary by Brent Hodge and Derik Murray. Here is the newly released trailer for the film.
Judging by the preview, testimonials from family, friends and fellow celebrities touch upon what a phenomenon he was in comedy because of his work on Saturday Night Live and in several films. But, of course, the tragedy of his existence — particularly that he didn’t seem to know when to turn the performer off in his personal life — has to be covered in an honest portrayal as well.
I Am Chris Farley will premiere on Spike Aug. 10 before being released on-demand and DVD Aug. 11.
