A period film set in the 19th century starring Tom Hiddleston, Jessica Chastain and Mia Wasikowska would be appealing enough based on its cast. But what if it’s also a gothic horror movie? And what if that film is being directed by modern monster master Gullermo Del Toro? All of that makes Crimson Peak one of the more hotly anticipated movies of the fall.
Legendary Pictures released a trailer back in February, setting the tone for a film combining horror and romance. But the latest preview for Crimson Peak shows that Del Toro appears to have a created a ghost story that looks great, has fantastic actors, features excellent special effects and, most importantly, could truly be scary. Take a look.
Del Toro has made scary films mixing elements of horror and fantasy before, with Cronos, The Devil’s Backbone and Pan’s Labyrinth. But he’s never made a true horror film for American audiences, who might be more familiar with him from more fantastical projects like the Hellboy movies and 2013’s Pacific Rim. Ultimately, Del Toro is a horror filmmaker who loves monsters and stories that go to deep, dark places. The fact that this movie is rated R is very encouraging in that regard.
Crimson Peak will hit theaters on Oct. 16.
