Watch: ‘Sherlock’ goes back to 19th century in Christmas Special trailer

When you heard about the BBC making a new Sherlock Holmes series in 2010, were you worried upon hearing that the show would be set in modern times with cell phone, texting, internet and other such contemporary touches? (And did you also wonder if Benedict Cumberbatch could possibly be someone’s real name?) I know I was.

But if you were expecting or hoping to see the detective in his signature houndstooth cap working cases in 19th century Victorian London, BBC’s upcoming Sherlock Christmas Special should fulfill those particular wishes. Check out the newly released trailer:

This really does seem like a trailer for an all-new Sherlock Holmes show that could have been released in 2010. Or imagine a Holmes movie released in 2015 starring Cumberbatch and Martin Freeman, which is what the style of this preview invokes. That would be a pretty big deal. (Of course, Cumberbatch and Freeman are now big deals due to the success of Sherlock, but use your imagination.)

Though BBC One did not announce an official date for the special (and its air date in the U.S. on PBS may be different anyway), it would seem reasonable to expect it sometime between Thanksgiving and Christmas this year. In addition to a nice holiday threat, the Christmas special also provides some sustenance for all of us eagerly awaiting season four of Sherlock, likely to debut in late 2016.
