Stephen Colbert debuts as the new host of The Late Show on Sept. 8. We haven’t seen much from the comedian since he signed off from The Colbert Report just before last Christmas.
However, Colbert’s few public appearances revealed that he grew a beard, a magnificent coat of surprisingly frosty white hair that made him look more grandfatherly than CBS likely prefers. Eventually, The Colbeard had to go. And the time has come. By the way, you might not want to watch the following video if you’re eating. Especially if you’re eating a hot dog.
As someone who grew a beard last fall and has grown rather attached to its warmth and companionship, I understand Colbert’s reluctance to part with his facial friend. Growing a beard is something men do in times of great change. And when we do finally shave, we emerge as new beings. Before that, of course, we experiment with different looks like mustaches and mutton chops. (Personally, I’m leaning toward the Wolverine look or a mustache in homage to my dad.)
Colbert has another three months before his Late Show debut, so depending on his virility, he could grow and shave another beard or two. Maybe even three. If he does so, perhaps he’ll record more videos to share of those transitions. If not, then at least we were fortunate enough that Colbert shared The Colbeard with us. We’ll never forget.
