The trailers for Mission: Impossible – Rogue Nation are really milking that scene where Tom Cruise is hanging off the side of a military cargo plane as it takes off, aren’t they?
Not that there’s anything wrong with that. It’s a memorably impressive shot and might end up being even better within the context of the movie. Hell, if I was Cruise, I’d demand that shot is in every trailer too. I am hanging off the side of a plane going into the air, and that is really me, not a stuntman! Here’s the latest international trailer for the film, scheduled for a July 31 release.

What I worry about, however, is whether or not Cruise hanging off the plane is the money shot of this new Mission: Impossible movie and we’ve already seen it, leaving few surprises for the actual film. The more optimistic view is that there’s plenty of other good stuff in the film and producers don’t want to give it away, so we keep getting the plane shot over and over in these trailers.
That’s probably more likely, as we get a hint of in this new trailer with a sequence in which Cruise’s Ethan Hunt has to hold his breath underwater for a significant amount of time. Apparently, Cruise trained to stay underwater for more than six minutes in preparation for the scene, which is an extended take without cuts.
The other worry I have is that poor Jeremy Renner is apparently relegated to all the bureaucratic storylines, trading quips with Alec Baldwin’s CIA head honcho and talking to no one in particular on screen through various communications devices. C’mon, man — this is Hawkeye we’re talking about. Give him some action. Or does Cruise get all the good stuff in his spy franchise? That’s the mission Renner has chosen to accept.
