Zack Snyder tweets out photo of Jason Momoa as Aquaman

When director Zack Snyder cast Jason Momoa to play Aquaman in Batman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice and subsequent DC Comics superhero films (including a standalone Aquaman film in 2018), it was fair to guess that the King of the Seven Seas wasn’t going to be the clean-cut gentleman we saw on the Super Friends or the boisterous swashbuckler portrayed in Batman: The Brave and the Bold cartoons.

No, Aquaman is going to be a badass, not just the guy who talks to fish and rides seahorses. And if there was any doubt about that, Snyder blew that out of the water by tweeting a photo of Momoa in costume late Thursday night.

“Unite the Seven” is presumably a reference to the seven seas that Aquaman rules. Perhaps it’s also a hint as to what the plotline might be for the character in his appearances with the cinematic Justice League, as well as his own film later on. (Some have speculated online that the “seven” are the members of the Justice League, including Superman, Batman and Wonder Woman.)

But the costume itself looks pretty cool, right? Obviously, Momoa — who’s played Conan the Barbarian and Khal Drogo on Game of Thrones (and was reportedly the first choice to play Drax in Guardians of the Galaxy) — was going to play someone formidable. Yet the look of the character definitely conveys a warrior with armor, tattoos and a trident. Aquaman’s signature scales, in addition to the gold (more of an orange in the comic books and cartoons) and green colors, are a part of the ensemble too.

Hopefully, this is the beginning of more images and promotional materials to come from Snyder and Warner Brothers, with a trailer rumored to be attached to Mad Max: Fury Road in May.

Batman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice, in which Aquaman will make his first on-screen appearance, hits theaters on March 25, 2016.
